The sport commonly referred to as wall ball originated in the 1930s when, as noted by the U.S. Wall Ball Association, beach-goers hitting a bald tennis ball against the sides of wooden jetties inspired the New York Parks Department to create community handball courts in the city’s parks. Nowadays, the game is a professional sport played at rec centers across the country. Dmitry Druzhinsky, co-founder of Brooklyn’s luxurious health and fitness center MatchPoint NYC, was recently accompanied by local politicians for the Pro Wall Ball Tournament. The annual competition has gained much traction billed as the “Battle of the Boroughs,” raising awareness of public health and youth empowerment. The champions were awarded a trophy and a year of bragging rights.
